Cow Magnet, Cow Magnets

Cow magnets are popular with dairy farmers and veterinarians to help prevent Hardware Disease in cattle. While grazing, cows eat everything from grass and dirt to nails, staples and bits of bailing wire (referred to as tramp iron). Tramp iron tends to lodge in the honeycombed walls of the reticulum, threatening the surrounding vital organs and causing irritation and inflammation, known as Hardware Disease. The cow loses her appetite and decreases milk output (dairy cows), or her ability to gain weight (feeder stock). Cow magnets help prevent this disease by attracting stray metal from the folds and crevices of the rumen and reticulum. One magnet works for the life of the cow.

Ring-5  Cow Magnet     Dimension:  3/4” dia. x 3-3/8” long

Item No.: 771001

Cow Magnet, Cow Magnets
Durable Its durable structure boasts plated, solid steel end caps for corrosion prevention and a solid steel connector rod through the core to reduce breakage in shipping and handling. No plastic parts involved.

Stronger Magnetizaton before assembly creates a consistent pulling force from each section along the length of the magnet and enhances its overall strength.

Superior Characteristically, the Ru-Master 5 has rounder ends and is slightly heavier than the original heavy-duty cow magnet. These qualities make it easier for the magnet to travel to the stomach and stay there.

AlNiCo 5  Cow Magnets    Dimension:  1/2” dia. x 3” long

Item No.: 771002

This is the standard cast Alnico 5 cow magnet with bright, metal finish. It is non-toxic and non-corrosive in use.

Ceramic 5  Cow Magnets    Dimension:  1/2” x 3/4” x 2-3/4” long

Item No.: 771003

This rectangular cow magnet is made of Ceramic 5 (Strontium Ferrite) magnet material. Its special magnetization pattern causes nails and other sharp metal objects line up along the length of the magnet where they are no longer a danger to the cow. The FDA-approved epoxy coating is gentle on the cow and helps protect the magnet from chipping. Rounded corners ensure safe and easy passage to the reticulum. Measures 1/2” x 3/4” x 2-3/4” long.

Cow Magnets

Now before we run into the details of cow magnets, like how it is produced, what are the components in it, why is it used for cows, and why it has such a weird name, we have to first know what exactly is a Cow Magnet.

What is a Cow Magnet?

A Cow Magnet is an eco-friendly and permanent magnet that’s the only purpose is to remove iron components from a cow’s body. It also contains essential minerals which keep them in good health. These kinds of magnets are very popular among farmers and veterinarians, and ranchers who use this in their cattle to prevent hardware disease which even sometimes leads to the cow’s death.

Composition of Cow Magnet

The most important thing to keep in mind while buying a cow magnet is to check whether the minerals used in it are toxic or not because that can be very dangerous to the cow’s health. This is the reason nowadays most of the cow magnets are made up of Ferrous Oxide (FeO) and stable Strontium (Sr) which have been proved healthy and safe for the cow’s body. Along with this, the magnet is also coated with valuable minerals which are very useful for cows and cattle. The cow magnet has no sharp edges to protect the cow’s interior from cuts and scratches and also it is in a form of a finger-sized shaped pill that can be consumed easily by cows.

What is Hardware Disease?

Now to understand the proper functioning of the cow magnet you have to first know what is Hardware Disease. You might be wondering what exactly is hardware disease since I have already mentioned it earlier. Well, it’s a common term for bovine traumatic reticulopericarditis and it is usually caused by the direct ingestion of sharp metallic object which becomes very difficult to digest and thus leading to that disease.

How Hardware Disease is Caused

After our machines finish working on the field, small pieces of iron nails and iron fillings are left scattered. Now, since cattle do not completely chew their food before swallowing they couldn’t differentiate between food substances and metals. Therefore, these sharp metallic objects like nails and wire are easily swallowed which are extremely dangerous for the animals. Generally, these small and sharp iron pieces, scratch the intestines and stomach, and the iron gets rusted which results in poisoning. But in some severe cases, when the objects travel through the rumen and pushed along the reticulum with the rest of the food, it moves into the peritoneal wall and causes severe inflammation. In a few rare cases, it has also been seen that the metal object penetrates the entire wall of the reticulum and then pierces the heart sac, which causes pericarditis.

Result of Hardware Disease

The Hardware Disease has resulted in the death of several cows and other cattle in the past few decades. Now in mild condition, the cow generally loses her appetite and decreases her milk output, along with losing the ability to gain weight. This can be treated in its early stages by using antibiotics or a surgery that involves physically removing the object. But why should we waste so much money on surgery and make our animals suffer if we can prevent it beforehand.

How to Prevent Hardware Disease

Now to prevent hardware disease which risks the lives of the cows, we can use Cow Magnets to reduce the risk of Hardware disease. Calves when they are about six months old have a major change in their diet and that is the time when they shift from sucking their mother’s milk to feeding on grass. But unknowingly they feed on small metallic things which can lead to harmful consequences. The cow magnet which is a kind of veterinary equipment is used to prevent such life-threatening disease among cattle. It is a ferrite magnet and has curved edges which can be easily swallowed.

The mineral-rich cow magnet is pushed down the cow’s throat and due to its proper ratio of weight and size, it remains in the first stomach. Then the magnet collects all the metallic substances and prevents them from going down into the more sensitive portion of the cow’s second, third, and fourth stomach. The magnet even holds the metals in such a way that its sharp edges of the magnet are covered by the round and smooth edges of the magnet.

Advantages of Cow Magnets

Securing cows from Hardware Disease is not the only purpose of cow magnet, but the minerals present in it provide some other kinds of health benefits too. The Strontium metal present in the magnet has been seen to help in the development and growth of bones along with increasing their strength. Due to its amazing pole pattern, metal substances like nails will be held parallel and be pulled towards the centre of the magnet. This prevents the sharp ends from puncturing any internal organs of the cattle.

Conclusion

These mineral-rich cow magnets are made with the sole purpose of saving the lives of the cows, cattle and prevent any kind of sickness, thus keeping the cows in good health. There is a need for a non-toxic magnet with a limited amount of magnetic field so that neither the health is affected due to the consumption of the cow magnets nor it fails to complete its task. The shape of the magnet along with its components which they are made up of are kept in mind during its construction such that the cows comfort, as well as the polarity of the magnets, are in balance. At last, the most interesting thing about these cow magnets is that it is cheap, small, and consumable, as well as it stays inside the stomach of the cows for a lifetime and there is no need to replace it, the magnet does its job very well and keeps the cows fit and fine. Thus, cow magnets are very useful for both the cows and their owners.
